[Review] Ogre – The Last Neanderthal (2014)

Ya tenemos entre oídos el nuevo lanzamiento del power trío estadounidense Ogre, titulado The last neanderthal. Su cuarto álbum de larga duración y un paso más hacia adelante en una carrera que mejora disco a disco. Seis años han pasado ya desde el Plague of the Planet y me atrevo a decir que estamos ante uno de sus mejores trabajos, cortesía de Minotauro Records. Una banda de esas quizás no tan conocidas pero que ya lleva unos catorce años destilando puro Doom/Heavy setentero con ecos Hard Rock psicodélicos. Escucha obligatoria.

El álbum nos propone unos 47 minutos, divididos en ocho pistas, de lo más variados. Como Nine Princes in Amber -segundo corte- en el que escucharemos ese toque épico del Heavy clásico en las poderosas quintas del riff y los agudos graznidos de cuervo que se marca el señor Ed Cunningham (con unos vocales y bajo excelentes durante todo el largo). O también Bad Trip, en el que demuestran la gran influencia que beben de los magnánimos Sabbath, con una onda Doom algo más lenta y oscura llena de potentes cambios de ritmo. En definitiva caña y mucho pedaleo (puro crybaby de ese que tanto mola) y es que ya os lo digo, un trabajo redondo y absolutamente dinámico que no aburre en ningún punto del minutaje.

Mención especial para el señor Ross Markonish, con una interpretación más que brillante a la guitarra, cabe destacar que en este álbum se ha lucido enormemente y se lo ha currado a base de bien. Con solazos de vértigo y punteos acojonantes como los del tema Son of Sisyphus, rasgueos sumamente atmósfericos y apasionados (Warpath) o el puro funkeo psych de Soulless Woman. Una combinación musical de lo más explosiva la que forman Markonish y Cunningham, un trío de veteranos con un estilo muy bien definido que sabe cumplir con las expectativas.

Nadie lo puede negar, se han marcado un puto discazo y para mí es lo mejor que han hecho. Ya tiene su sitio en la lista del TOP 2014 pues son una banda que, aunque tarde seis años en sacar disco, sigue siendo garantía de calidad. Todo un referente del sonido pesado estadounidense.

Lightsabres is a one-man band from Luleå, Sweden, playing dark psychedelic stoner punk with touches of post-rock and doom. Drawing inspiration from early US punk and grunge, fuzzed-out doom/stoner rock and various ambient/instrumental bands, the music is recorded at home for the ultimate amount of filth.

The debut album Demons was released in December '13 on 12" vinyl and cassette by Hink Inc. Records (Sweden) and 808 New York Tapes (US) respectively. All songs are written*, performed and recorded by John Strömshed. A follow-up titled Spitting Blood is planned for the first half of 2014.

Paying Homage to the rotten filth from which they were born, Blackwitch Pudding are a band of three Wizards who dwell in Portland, Oregon. Legend has it they are the bastard sons of Satan, raised from a stagnant used puddle of ergot, left by the mysterious Blackwitch, hundreds of years ago. Trained in the dark arts of doom and witchery, these Wizards wander the cosmos in search of nothing, for their path is a simple one.... the riffs must be heavy and the smoke must be heavier.

Taste the Pudding is Blackwitch Pudding's self-released debut. Heavy, yet catchy, the riffs cast by this power trio of Wizards will leave you spellbound. The album was conjured at Toadhouse Studio, an established sonic proving ground that has churned out gems by the likes of Red Fang, White Orange, and Norska. Mixing, mastering, and final touches were handled by the legendary Billy Anderson, well known for his work with The Melvins, OM, Agalloch, Blood Ceremony, Neurosis, Sleep, Weedeater, and many, many more.
